Energy Efficiency is one of the best near-term solutions to help industry meet emission reduction goals. Alberta has more industrial energy use than most provinces. Trying to save energy without information is like trying to get somewhere in an unfamiliar city without any road signs or Google maps. With proper monitoring, utility use has been tracked, monitored and reduced to achieve significant reductions in energy costs.

Improving Economic and Environmental With Lower CI Outcomes
There are many pathways for conversion of Biomass into “drop in” liquid distillate fuels, specifically Renewable Diesel (RD) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Each pathway has different conversion efficiencies, economic performance and long-term production costs, generating low carbon products that have a Life cycle carbon intensity (CI) of 5 gCO2e/MJ (over 90% reduction from fossil diesel / jet fuel emissions), has been quite the journey and there’s more to come. Demonstrating a strong financial performance is key and there have been many learnings along the way as these technology approaches have been developed to achieve such.

Locating Wasted Energy: From Lost Gas to Productive Use
Geologic's unique well, facility and infrastructure data & analytics now makes it possible to find emissions reduction opportunities that are also commercial opportunities, and to rank them basin wide. Partnering with PTAC, Geologic applied this approach in a study spanning 170,000 wells, showing that close to $100 million of natural gas is lost each year to venting and flaring. This session shows where that wasted energy coincides with existing infrastructure and growing power demand, and how operators can evaluate the strongest opportunities on both emissions and business value.

Global Environmental Policy Variability: Causes & Consequences for Innovation in Canada
From coal and oil sands to petrochemicals and power generation, environmental policies have driven innovations around clean fuels and carbon capture while generating concerns about overregulation and lost competitive ground. The current policy and geopolitical landscape have seen the elevation of other priorities from trade conflict to energy security concerns to capturing economic opportunity around AI and data centers — in Ottawa, Washington, and beyond. Capital markets have eased off ESG pressures and capital available to improve environmental outcomes is harder to get access to today.
Canadian environmental policy is shifting to try to adapt to these new realities, raising the following questions for Alberta:
· What is Canada's global leadership profile achieving while meeting global resource and energy needs and what are the upsides and downsides of going further and faster than other economic competitors?
· How do we continue to develop natural resources while being mindful of long-term environmental goals, pressing policy goals around growth, productivity, diversification and economic security? Are these goals at odds or mutually reinforcing?
· Ultimately, what are the strengths of the Canadian/Alberta policy environment amid these shifting conditions in attracting capital for environmental advancements? How do we ensure that sufficient capital remains available to help our innovators.

It explores how financing suited to different technologies, public–private investment, and stronger customer demand can help Canadian and Albertan cleantech companies attract capital and scale domestically.
