Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation, ACR’s 2023 Resource Leadership Award Recipient

We are pleased to announce Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (AIOC) as ACR’s 2023 Resource Leadership Award Recipient. Please join us in celebrating AIOC and their contributions toward Alberta’s resource industry, along with our other award recipients, at ACR’s Awards Banquet on March 5, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta.

2023 Resource Leadership Award

AIOC is a Crown Corporation with a Board of Directors, who are accountable to the Minister of Indigenous Relations

They were founded in 2019 by the Government of Alberta in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and to support Indigenous economic prosperity.

AIOC addresses a gap in the capital structure available to Indigenous Communities. The gap is addressed through a loan guarantee which:

  • Lowers the costs/interest rate to borrow

  • Improves lending terms

  • Lowers the risk to lend

  • Supports Indigenous Communities to acquire equity share ownership in mid to large scale investment projects

These projects can bring long term, stable financial returns over multiple generations to accelerate their participation in the economy and fund self-determination.

The mandate sectors include:

  • natural resources,

  • agriculture,

  • telecommunications,

  • transportation projects, and related infrastructure.

AIOC has provided $680 million in loan guarantees to 42 communities, 30 First Nations and 12 Metis communities since launch in 2019. They have also supported capacity grants in 46 communities.

Thank you to ATCO, partner of the 2023 Resource Leadership Award.
