Canadian Natural is a senior independent crude oil and natural gas exploration, development and production company based in Calgary, Alberta.
Our operations began in 1989 in the shallow gas basin of Alberta (which still contributes to our success today). Between 1991 and 1996, we expanded natural gas production to British Columbia, and added heavy crude oil operations (conventional and thermal in situ) through acquisitions across Western Canada. International offshore properties (North Sea and Offshore Africa) were added to our portfolio in 2000.
We continued expansion of operations in Western Canada in subsequent years, including the addition of oil sands mining to our portfolio, with first oil achieved at Horizon Oil Sands in 2009. Oil Sands mining activities grew in 2017 with the acquisition of a 70% working interest and operatorship of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP). We also expanded thermal in situ and heavy oil operations in 2019, with the acquisition of Devon Canada assets.
