ACR’s 2019 Annual Awards Banquet

Recognizing Industry Leaders; Contributing Success to Alberta’s Resource Sector

The beginning of February has always been a busy and exciting time for the Alberta Chamber of Resources (ACR) – and this year was no different! On February 1st, the organization had a full room at the Edmonton Convention Centre (formerly Shaw Conference Centre) for their event.

The evening celebrated industry leaders who have made significant contributions to the sustainable development of Alberta’s resource sectors, and who have advanced the relationship between the Indigenous peoples of Alberta and the natural resource sectors. Two outstanding individuals accepted their award recognition.

Jessica Vandenberge, Indigenous Community Consultant and Project Engineer at Urban Systems Ltd. was presented with the 2018 Indigenous Resource Leadership Award in recognition of the extensive efforts she has undertaken outside of her formal work to promote understanding and education with Indigenous peoples, particularly youth.  Jessica’s full bio can be found here.

Steve Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Suncor Energy Inc. was presented with the 2018 Resource Leadership Award in recognition of his significant contributions to Alberta’s resource sector and being a leader in conversations that connect the environment and economy. Steve’s full bio can be found here.

More than 450 industry leaders, members, students and special guests attended the evening’s celebrations. For the second year, Matt Day emceed the night and accompanied Marc Beaudin, gracing guests with their musical talents. The keynote presentation was also a highlight of the evening, brought by The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, 22nd Prime Minister of Canada, who discussed components of his new book, Right Here, Right Now.

As an evening of celebration and recognition, students from the
University of Alberta – Faculty of Engineering School of Mining, were presented their Scholarships. These scholarships are given on an annual basis, funded by ACR member mining companies. Ten students were awarded and recognized during the event.

This event would not be the success it is without the generous support of our sponsors, attendance of guests and hard work put in by ACR executive and staff. We are proud of another successful year and hope to continue raising the bar in our efforts. We look forward to celebrating in 2020 with you again.
