Pat Carlson (2017)

PAT CARLSON
Founding Chief Executive Officer | Original Director, Seven Generations Energy

The 2017 Resource Leadership Award is presented to Pat Carlson, Founding CEO and Original Director of Seven Generations Energy, in recognition of his unique leadership style in pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology that define leading performance in the oil and gas sector.

A creative engineer, instinctual entrepreneur and energy visionary with 40 years of professional success, Pat defines his business through his stakeholders’ eyes. Pat insists that Seven Generations maps the path to successful teamwork, competitive leadership, financial performance and social permission by earning its right to succeed from those it serves: customers, partners, suppliers, residents, employees, communities where it operates, society, and of course, financial backers.

Pat authored 7G’s operating creed – the Level 1 Corporate Policy Statement or Code of Conduct. It is the behavioural source code and a personal pledge for how people will run 7G. Seven Generations is Pat’s fourth start-up after previous success at North American Oil Sands Ltd., Krang Energy and Passage Energy. A remarkable engineering and energy innovator, Pat creates value and expands opportunity in the sweet spot of enterprise.

Beyond the office, Pat and his wife Connie have touched many lives – most evident in their donation of more than $4 million to Pat’s alma mater – the University of Calgary for the Schulich School of Engineering, and for the Strengths in ADHD Research Project at the University of Calgary, plus numerous other charitable organizations.

Pat earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary in 1975, is a professional engineer, an active member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta and in 2008 acquired the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Pat’s contributions have been recognized with a Canadian Engineering Leader Award (2013) from the Schulich School of Engineering, and in October 2015, Pat was awarded the Prairies EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Oil and Gas.
